REVIEW:
At first, Never Ceese looks like many other vampire and werewolf stories, but
Sue Dent has added a few new wrinkles to the legends. Ceese, the werewolf,
is looking for redemption, a release from the curse she carries. Richard, a
vampire, has become too cynical to believe his curse could be lifted. Yet he has
fought the temptation to bite any person and make his own curse irreversible.
Somehow both of these wretched people have refrained from cursing anyone
else for over two hundred years. Penelope, companion to Richard and old
friend of Ceese, has telepathically called Ceese to come to her. She believes
that the werewolf and the vampire can work together to find freedom from
their curses. What she did not count on was the instantaneous loathing they
would have for each other. Unfortunately, Penelope is dying, but she succeeds
in eliciting a promise from Richard to take care of Ceese.
In Never Ceese, Sue Dent has created a genre-breaking story that should
become a classic. Two stock characters from traditional horror tales actually
seek redemption and a Christian worldview pervades the novel, yet in a way
that is highly entertaining rather than heavy-handed. There are liberal doses
of humor to help advance the tale as well as plenty of action and scheming.
Some of the technical portions sound like Ms. Dent did her own research about
stem cells, and it only enhances the story.
Most young adults should find Never Ceese to be a book they will be keen on
reading over and over again. Those who are mainly interested in romance may
not care much for it, but those who like werewolves, vampires, fantasy and
thrillers will especially enjoy it.
